Living in a bustling city can rob us the joy of living. However, Le Corbusier’s Apartment-Studio offers a space brimming with experimentation and happiness for him and his wife, Yvonnne.
As I ascended to the unit on the 7th floor, the narrow stairwell reminded me of Hong Kong’s “Tang Lau” tenement buildings with atriums. Doubtful of whether I’d arrived at the right spot, I was captivated by the penthouse’s curvature along the walls and ceilings. Overlapping linework creates vibrant, layered spaces, with each room offering art-like, 3-dimensional experiences that surprise and delight visitors. Lighting fixtures, joineries, and color lift the open-plan layout’s shadowing effect.
To me, an impressive masterpiece’s success hinges not only on a combination of art and architecture, but also the starchitect’s sense of humor. So, have you found your joyful dwelling yet?
